Can You Donate Blood If You Have a Tattoo?

People who want to donate — and potentially become frequent donors — need to be aware of the eligibility criteria. One common question prospective donors may have is if you have a tattoo, can you donate blood if you have a tattoo?

A big Yes! When you have a tattoo implanted on your skin you can donate the blood. There was at one time a greater limitation in the blood industry about it. We’ve also seen the horror stories of people having tattoos or piercing hepatitis. With strengthened tattoo industry laws, there are more ways to give blood after you get one. You will then be part of the noble cause and save millions of lives around you. But there are also specific criteria that you must fulfill to know that can you donate blood if you have a tattoo. Let’s find them out.

Can a Tattoo Person Donate Blood

1. How long does a person have to wait to donate blood after getting a tattoo?

It is the second question that comes up in the mind of someone who has a tattoo after eligibility – ‘ can a tattoo person donate blood?’. The time to become a healthy donor after having ink is called the duration of Deferral. And if you’ve had a tattoo that means you’re overdue. Don’t worry; this is myth again. Blood donation is permissible at the earliest after getting inked if a state-regulated agency applied the tattoo using a sterile procedure, according to the Red Cross. Currently, only a few states control tattoo facilities, so most tattooed donors must wait twelve months after tattooing before donating blood. And, basically, you’ll have to wait 4 months to 12 months after having a blood donation tattoo.

2. How do you verify whether you are an eligible donor/ can tattoo person donate blood?

In India, the Health Department is responsible for operating and registering tattoo parlors. They are licensed in compliance with section 23-1-39 of the Rhode Island General Laws as amended, and the rules and regulations herein, as they relate to the registration of tattoo parlors/shops. To avoid contaminating the blood with blood-borne infections, licensed tattoo shops are expected to pass certain protection and health requirements. With unregulated tattoo shops, such requirements can not be assured. In India, regulated tattoo shops make us eligible for blood donation after six months.

3. What steps do you need to take before a person can donate blood?

When you go to the blood bank to donate blood, the blood bank staff will do the evaluation and take a short history of your safety from you. The evaluation includes: You will show the employees of blood banks the freshly got tattoo or some old tattoo. You have to provide the blood bank with full details that include; where did you get the tattoo from, when did you get the last tattoo, by whom, and how?
You must have evidence of the correct data that the tattoo was inked under the sterile condition, and the applied ink was fresh. You must also provide some history of blood-borne disease beforehand. This evaluation is intended to prevent the spread of hepatitis and to test the possibility of transmissible transfusion infection (TTI), including HIV AIDS, hepatitis B and C, and other diseases born in the blood.

4. Meet other basic requisites

Along with the tattoo ink calculation below are the minimum blood donation requirements:

  • Be 17 years of age minimum
  • Weigh 110 pounds or more (49.89 kg)
  • Not be anemic
  • Body temperature is not above 99.5 ° F (37.5 ° C)
  • Pregnant women prohibited
  • Does not have any medical conditions which disqualify
  • No tattoos, piercings, or acupuncture therapies have been obtained from unregulated facilities over the last year

5. Precautions to be taken

The one who gets tattooed himself must make sure that each time the artist uses fresh, safe, and sterile needles to prevent blood-borne illnesses. This is because 10-30 percent of cases of Hepatitis B virus transfusion in India is due to the use of contaminated needles each year.

So keep up the blessing act and keep saving lives. But make sure that you take a healthy diet, and between two donations there is a difference of at least 8 weeks (56 days).

Does Having A Tattoo Affect Getting a Job?

For thousands of years, tattoos have been around, with evidence indicating that it was done as early as 3100 BC. However, we all must be wondering ‘Does having a tattoo affect getting a Job’? .While all those years ago we will never know the true reasons for its creation, there is no denying that it is prevalent in both modern and ancient cultures across the globe. Tattoos are used in Western culture as a means of speech and decoration and are no longer limited to a small segment of society, but to people from all walks of life and rank.

While there is clearly a broader acceptance of tattoos in the workplace, there are still some associated taboos, especially those that are large, visible, or cover noticeable areas such as the face, neck, and hands. There are always negative perceptions about the applicant and getting obvious tattoos may mean that they are unfairly excluded from a potential job opportunity when compared directly with an equivalent applicant without tattoos.

Does Having a Tattoo Affect Getting a Job

Long gone are those days when we heard from our parents ‘Having a tattoo will affect you from getting a job!”. However, things are changing slowly. Researchers from the University of Miami and Western Australia University have been researching how having a tattoo affects getting a job. The study published Tuesday in Human Relations found that having a tattoo could even help job candidates in competitive markets.

The researchers found that getting a visible tattoo has little effect on getting a job, income, or earnings. The amounts of money that somebody made with tattoos were practically inseparable from someone without tattoos. In fact, the researchers have found that people with tattoos might be more likely to be hired in some cases.

More than 40% of millennials in the U.S. and around the world have at least one tattoo, though 72% say they usually cover-up. The researchers therefore only observed those with visible tattoos — about 2,200 people around the country — to see if their ink really made a mark. Based on their findings, a person’s tattoo didn’t matter to employers at all, and in some cases, it actually helped the participant in the study get a job. “Not only are the wages and annual earnings of tattooed employees statistically indistinguishable from the wages and annual earnings of non-tattooed employees,” read the study findings, “but tattooed individuals are equally likely to gain employment, and in some cases even more likely to.”

The long-held stigma associated with tattoos, and especially visible ones, may be eroding, particularly among younger people who see body art as a normal and popular form of personal expression. Given the growing prevalence of tattoos in society – about 40 percent for young adults – hiring managers and supervisors who discriminate against tattooed employees are likely to be at a competitive disadvantage for the most professional staff

HOW TO KEEP THE TATTOOS FROM FADING AWAY

As the saying goes – “A tattoo can last forever;” but a tattoo doesn’t always look good forever.
Having a tattoo is obviously something you’ve thought about for a long time and hard. It is a permanent mark and something you should be proud to have. The color should be vivid at first, than powerful. This will stay as good as new in a perfect world but tattoos can fade for several different reasons — some quicker than others.

Whether you’ve had your tattoo for a couple of years, you might have found it isn’t as fresh and exciting as it once was. This is because it most probably has faded. If your tattoo has faded and you want to know why, or if you’re just trying to prevent your tattoo first from fading, then read on to know how to keep your tattoos from fading away.

How To Keep Your Tattoos From Fading Away

Let us first understand the difference between Black Vs. Color Tattoo

Tattoos and their longevity differ depending partly on whether the tattoo is black or red. It might not be considered when deciding on design but it may clarify why your tattoo has faded.

Black tattoos tend to contrast more heavily with the skin, and therefore often have more definition. Color tattoos are fantastic to blend different shades and create some effects or impact but they also cost more and tend to lose their vibration faster than black tattoos.

Here are some tips on how to keep the tattoos from fading away.

  1. Follow the Tattoo artist’s aftercare instructions
One of the best ways to keep your tattoos from fading away is to ensure that you carefully follow the instructions on tattoo aftercare provided by your tattoo artist.
  2. Do not itch!
Scratching the scabs on the tattoo will help the tattoo disappear quicker during the healing process. Do not take off any scabs, it doesn’t matter whether it’s large or small or how enticing it may be. When your tattoo is healing, allow the scabs to fall off without interruption. Some tattoos will scab a great deal but others will not. When you’re taking good care of your tattoo, you’ll definitely experience less scabbing.
  3. Avoid tight clothes
Wear loose clothes particularly when the tattoo heals, to keep your tattoo from fading away. It can rub tight clothing on a fresh tattoo which can be really distracting. Often, tight clothes scratch the tattoo causing the scabs to pull free.
  4. Avoid contact with direct sunlight
Sun rays can damage your tattoos too, whether old or new. If you want long to keep your tattoos vibrant and to keep the tattoos from fading away –  avoid direct sunlight, particularly during the healing stage. Tanning beds can damage your tattoos a lot too. When you want to sunbathe, make sure you do it at least 2 weeks later and use a really strong sunscreen.
  5. Take good care of your skin
The only way to keep your tattoo from fading away is to take care of your face. If the tattoo is fresh or old, the better you handle your skin, the longer the tattoo stays brighter. Taking care of your skin means keeping your skin moist and clean, and washing off any harsh skin chemicals. Keep in mind that the longer the harsh chemicals remain on your skin, the greater the damage it will cause.
  6. Tattoo Touch-ups
Everyone heals at different speeds and the recovery process of our skins can sometimes produce results that are less than desirable-sometimes due to the application technique, sometimes due to the skin’s natural conditions. You may be fully healed and find the colors may not be fully even throughout; rubbing the scab off unintentionally will also cause patches until the skin recovers. It is where a touch up (a newly healed tattoo within six months to a year) comes in. Touch-ups are a great way to keep your tattoos from fading away and to maintain those vibrant fresh colors on your skin.

Bottom Line

Your tattoo will look good in the years after you get it, but after some time it will start to fade. Therefore it is very important to obey the guidelines listed above to keep the tattoos from fading away.

Can You Get HIV from Tattoo or Body Piercing?

A tattoo is a type of body art that is produced by applying ink, using a needle, into the skin’s dermis layer. This changes the pigment of the skin and can be used to make nearly any imaginable image. As the art form progresses from the fringes into the mainstream, many have started to wonder if you can get HIV from getting a tattoo or body piercing. Since tattooing and piercing both draw blood, it may seem a fair concern to some of you.

How Transmission Works?

Tattoo artists inject ink into the second layer of a person’s skin, known as the dermis, to create their designs. They do this by using a tattoo machine that punctures the skin with a series of tiny, high-speed needles (called a gun). In comparison, body piercing uses a single needle to perforate the flesh.

Because of the broken skin, when the gun or needles are not properly disinfected, such infections can potentially be passed from one client to the next.

The Odds are Less Though

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the risk of HIV through tattooing or body piercing is considered low to negligible

A Person Can Get HIV from a Tattoo or Body Piercing :

  • A person who is being tattooed or pierced has a high HIV viral load (meaning there is a lot of virus in his blood).
  • The person bleeds heavily on the equipment.
  • The equipment between customers is not being disinfected.
  • Blood from the infected equipment then reaches the body of the next customer in large amounts for the infection to occur.

Within the sense of body art, certain requirements are likely to be met as extremely slim. There is nowhere near as large a potential for infection as, say, injecting drug use in which the HIV-infected blood is injected directly into a vein. Despite this, there are those who remain sincerely interested, including tattoo artists. A 27-year-old man who was denied service by a Utah tattoo parlor because he was HIV-positive, filed a lawsuit against the tattoo parlor in 2017, as reported in Insurance Journal. Although the decision was reasonable it does not mean that the risk outside of a licensed parlor is insignificant. In reality, the risk of problems with unlicensed or informal artists increases. Can include gang tattoos, jail tattoos, or piercing between friends. Acute symptoms of hepatitis may develop within 2 weeks to 6 months. Infection with chronic hepatitis C can last for years and cause significant liver damage.

If you are considering getting a tattoo or a piercing, ask the parlor staff what methods they use to prevent HIV and other bloodborne infections from spreading. Often, you might ask for evidence that the artist who performs the operation is qualified and the license is up to date.

You may also consider contacting the local health department to find out what regulations are in effect in tattoo or piercing parlors about protection. Though state laws can vary considerably, most do agree on one thing: age limits. Currently, 38 states ban minors from being pierced or tattooed without parental consent

Least Painful Places To Get a Tattoo

One of the questions most frequently asked when deciding whether to get a tattoo is’ will it hurt?
‘The answer is simple and straightforward- yes. Really, there is no painless way to stick needles in your skin to leave a permanent mark.

How painful the tattoo is, however, depends on many factors including your specific reaction to pain and where you want to get tattooed on your body. When you are talking of having a tattoo and you have a poor tolerance to pain, it would be prudent to find one of the least painful places to have a tattoo on your body:

Areas of the body that have fewer nerve endings, more fat, and thicker skin will generally be less painful than patches that have thin skin and little fat to act as a cushion. Therefore the spot you choose for your tattoo is so important.

The below chart will give you an outline about the least painful places to get a tattoo:

Least Painful Places To Get a Tattoo
Least Painful Places To Get a Tattoo

Upper/Outer Thigh

One of the best places to get inked and the least painful places to get a tattoo is on your upper outer thigh if you’re afraid of tattoo pain. This is because this body segment has a healthy fat layer, with very few nerve endings. Having a tattoo at the upper outer thigh has extra advantages. For example, Hiding tattoos on your thighs is simple, so this is a perfect place for people who need to cover up their tattoos for work or other purposes. It’s also a fairly large part of the body, which is perfect if your tattoo design is of considerable size, and because of pain concerns, you don’t want to have to compromise on your work of art.

Shoulders

The outer/rear shoulder area is the most common area on the body for tattoos, particularly first tattoos. This is one of the least painful places to get tattooed because there are not many nerve endings here and the skin is thick, so the needle scratching doesn’t hurt too much.

Forearm

With the first tattoo, the forearm is a perfect spot because it has a lot of muscle and thick skin, but not a lot of nerve endings, which means it is fairly pain-free. It is a perfect place for mid-size tattoos with intricate designs, on the grounds that when the tattoo artist has to fill in lots of tiny details, it won’t be as painful. Forearm tattoos can also be a perfect introduction to discussion with other like-minded people since they are easily noticeable much of the time (unless you are an Eskimo).

Upper/Lower Back

The upper and lower back as well as the elbows are popular places to get tattooed and also the least painful places to get a tattoo. The back is one of the main areas of the body, and people want to get permanently inked there because it gives them a generous canvas on which to work. The amount that you feel during your tattoo will vary depending on how close the tattoo artist gets to your spine and hips when it comes to pain. That is because there are more nerve endings in certain places under the skin, resulting in a higher degree of pain. Second, the pain that you feel can vary greatly depending on your shape and size. A curvier person, for example, is more likely to have more fat on the lower back than someone with a slimmer body. Therefore, you should expect to experience more discomfort if you are smaller because the needle will face less resistance as it passes through the skin and closer to the bone.

Calf

Calf tattoos are great for first-timers to get a tattoo, making them one of the most common places and the least painful places to get a tattoo. The calf region beneath the skin has smaller clumps of nerve endings and plenty of fat and muscle. That means having a tattoo on your calf is a piece of cake compared to, for example, being tattooed on your ankle. The calf is just another part of the body with a large smooth surface, so it’s a good place to add bigger tattoos or tattoos with lots of detail. Remember the fact that if the tattoo artist has to pause and start making the information right, or goes over the skin more than once, you won’t feel as much pain in here. Of course, with a calf tattoo, particularly in summer, you will be able to easily show your ink off to other people.

Outer Bicep

If you want tattoos that would be easy to reveal to people, the outer bicep is a highly noticeable area (if you don’t wear a long sleeve shirt, of course!) The advantage is there is a lot of muscle in this area, resulting in a much less painful experience and the least painful places to get a tattoo.
